Why Sustainability Matters in Education
Education is about preparing young people for the world they will inherit. Schools are uniquely positioned to model the values and practices that will define a sustainable future. By embedding sustainability into daily operations and decision making, schools show students that climate responsibility is not an abstract concept but an everyday commitment.
When schools actively reduce waste and cut emissions, not only do they comply with changing regulations and reduce their overheads, but they also inspire pupils to believe that positive change is achievable.
New Regulations Reshaping the Sector
Starting September 2025, all schools and colleges in England must appoint a Sustainability Lead and have a Climate Action Plan in place by December. The Department for Education advises that plans should cover decarbonisation, resilience to climate impacts, biodiversity, and climate education. These requirements are already influencing inspections and funding, making sustainability a strategic priority rather than an optional project.
The Hidden Cost of Energy Waste
Energy waste in education is significant. In the United Kingdom, about 30% of a typical school’s energy is used when buildings are empty over weekends and holidays. Even outside school hours during term time, many schools consume between 57% and 64% of their energy because heating, lighting, or equipment are left running.
Schools that address operational behaviour have shown they can cut consumption by around 10% in a year without large investments. These figures exceed good practice targets, highlighting the potential for savings and emissions reductions.
How ClearVUE.Business Supports Schools
ClearVUE.Business, through our ClearVUE.Zero platform, helps schools meet these challenges. Our system gives detailed, real-time insights into energy use, revealing where waste occurs. With accurate baselines and monitoring, schools can set realistic targets, track improvements, and embed those figures within their Climate Action Plans. ClearVUE.Zero also supports compliance reporting and provides actionable guidance for operational changes such as refining heating schedules and optimising equipment use.

Meet Us at Education Estates 2025
ClearVUE.Business will be present at Education Estates 2025 on the 14th and 15th October, ready to demonstrate how advanced energy and carbon management technology can transform learning environments into efficient, low carbon spaces. This event brings together decision makers from across the education sector, making it an ideal opportunity to explore practical strategies for meeting the new requirements.
Sustainability Leads, estate managers, headteachers, and trustees will be able to speak directly with our experts, review real-world results, and see how actionable data can drive meaningful cost and emissions reductions.
If you are attending, or even if you cannot make the event, we encourage you to get in touch with us today to discuss your school’s specific challenges and discover how to start your sustainability journey now. Case Study: Tor Bridge School

Tor Bridge School in Plymouth illustrates the benefits of data driven energy management. Before adopting ClearVUE.Zero, the school lacked visibility of what drove its high energy costs. After implementation, it reduced consumption by 37%, saving a projected £19,563 annually and cutting 131,119 kilowatt hours of energy. This reduction equates to around 30,736 kilograms of avoided CO2e emissions.
A spokesperson for Tor Bridge School said: “ClearVUE.Zero gives me the ability to see what I have done and what I can do to increase savings and further cut carbon emissions. It’s important for me to know that what I am doing is working, and that I have ClearVUE.Zero measuring for me.”
